From expansive shorelines to off-the-beaten-path coves, there are Door County beaches for every kind of summer day
With nearly 300 miles of shoreline stretching along Lake Michigan and the bay of Green Bay, it’s no surprise that Door County beaches are one of the peninsula’s most beloved summer attractions.
Whether you’re looking for a calm, family-friendly beach just up the road, a quieter state-park shoreline worth a longer drive, or an under-the-radar spot you’ve never been to before, there are plenty of Door County beaches for every beachgoer. The good news is that Ephraim Shores Resort is just a drive (or a ferry ride) away from all of them!
Our peninsula’s variety of beaches is largely due to our geology. Door County sits atop the Niagara Escarpment — the same limestone ridge that forms the cliffs of Niagara Falls hundreds of miles away. Glaciers carved the peninsula thousands of years ago, leaving behind dunes, bluffs, and sloping sandy bays. That mix of landscapes is exactly what makes our Door County beaches so memorable — and it also has a little to do with why we have the best wineries in Door County, too.
For beachgoers looking to plan your visit, here’s a list of our favorite Door County beaches, grouped according to the day you might be after:
Close to Ephraim Shores
If you’d rather spend your day at the beach than in the car, these two spots are right in our backyard.
Ephraim Beach (Ephraim)
Just a two-minute drive from Ephraim Shores Resort (depending on summer traffic, of course!), Ephraim Beach is a small sandy beach right on Eagle Harbor. Visitors love it for its shallow and calm water, and its western-facing view makes it one of the best places in town to watch the sunset. Pack a towel and walk over after breakfast (it’s about a 15 minute walk along Water Street), or wander down in the evening for an easy Door County beach day.
Nicolet Bay Beach (Peninsula State Park, Fish Creek)
A short drive south of Ephraim Shores, Nicolet Beach is the crown jewel of Peninsula State Park and one of the most beloved Door County beaches. The sandy shoreline frames the warm waters of Nicolet Bay, making it a favorite for families with kids. Visitors can rent kayaks or paddleboards at the Nicolet Bay Camp Store, or make it a relaxing day by just spreading a blanket on the sand for the afternoon. Just don’t forget your Wisconsin State Park sticker!
Worth the drive (or the ferry)
Some of Door County’s most memorable beaches take a little extra effort to reach, but they’re absolutely worth it. Here are the three we’d choose if we had a little extra time to get there:
Newport State Park — Europe Bay Beach (Ellison Bay)
At the far northern tip of the peninsula, Newport State Park is Wisconsin’s only designated wilderness state park — and a certified International Dark Sky Park, too. Europe Bay Beach is a long, sandy stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline reached by a short hike from the parking area, and even at the height of summer it’s often nearly empty. If your idea of a perfect beach day involves solitude, bird chirps, and the sound of waves rather than crowds, this is the place.
Whitefish Dunes State Park (Sturgeon Bay)
For something truly unique among Door County beaches, head south to Whitefish Dunes State Park, home to the highest sand dunes on the western shore of Lake Michigan. The wide, sandy beach is backed by towering dunes — Old Baldy, the tallest, rises 93 feet above lake level — and miles of hiking trails wind through the surrounding pine and hardwood forests. It’s got a wild, untouched feel — perfect for when you want to get away from the summer crowds.
Schoolhouse Beach (Washington Island)
Worth the ferry ride to Washington Island, Schoolhouse Beach is one of only a handful of beaches in the world made entirely of smooth, polished limestone stones instead of sand. Tucked into a protected cove on the island’s north shore, the water is crystal clear and remarkably calm — ideal for swimming or wading on a warm afternoon. Just remember: collecting stones from Schoolhouse Beach is prohibited (and carries a hefty fine), so leave only footprints and take only photos.
Quiet, low-traffic beaches
If the busiest Door County beaches aren’t quite your speed, these under-the-radar spots are perfect for a peaceful afternoon.
Clark Lake Beach (Sturgeon Bay area)
Tucked away on the shore of one of Door County’s few inland lakes, Clark Lake Beach offers a different kind of swimming experience — warmer water, no waves, and a relaxed, neighborhood feel that you won’t find at the busier Door County beaches. The sandy shoreline and shallow water makes it perfect for families with kids, and the surrounding woods give it a secretive feel.
Sand Bay Town Park (Sister Bay)
A local favorite just outside Sister Bay, Sand Bay Town Park is a small, sandy beach on the bay side of the peninsula that rarely draws a crowd. The shallow water warms up nicely by midsummer and is great for swimming, and the modest size of the park keeps things mellow. Bring a book, a beach chair, and plan to stay awhile.
Whether you’re after a five-minute walk to the water or a day-trip to a quieter part of the peninsula, Door County beaches have a way of making every summer visit feel a little more memorable.
