Ways to enjoy fall beauty while staying at a downtown Ephraim resort

We have said it once and we will say it again, Peninsula State Park is only a five minute drive from Ephraim Shores Resort, and offers Door County’s best views. These can be enjoyed in multiple ways. Get some exercise while taking in the beauty of fall by hiking or biking on the various trails at Peninsula State Park.

You can also enjoy the fall colors by golfing at Peninsula State Park Golf Course. Specifically, one of our favorite views of downtown Ephraim is on hole 10. It overlooks the harbor, and has a picturesque view of downtown Ephraim that you won’t want to miss. Play a quick 18 and don’t forget a camera. The views are right on par.

Another way to see the gorgeous fall colors in Ephraim is from the water. Bring your kayaks and enjoy the view of the bluffs, trees, and islands around Eagle Harbor. In addition to being a downtown Ephraim Resort, Ephraim Shores is also a Door County hotel on the water so you can put your kayaks in right from our private waterfront.

Saving the best for last. The Ephraim bluff offers a breathtaking overlook of Ephraim and Eagle Harbor, showcasing the fall colors that Door County boasts of. The bluff is a short walk from Ephraim Shores, just past Wilson’s and behind the Ephraim Moravian Church. Ephraim is a picture-perfect village, and even more so from above.

With the schedule of events and the opening of businesses constantly changing, we’ve come up with a list of Door County staples that can be done outdoors and a safe distance from others.

Summertime adventures start at a Door County hotel on the water

Spend time on the water. The best part of staying at a Door County hotel on the water is getting to spend sunny summer days on the bay. Bring your boat, personal watercraft, paddle boards, or kayaks for some fun in the sun. Door County has gorgeous coastline, making it a time for sightseeing as well as staying cool.

Hike or bike at a state park. Peninsula State Park is just a five minute drive away from Ephraim Shores and has miles of trails. A bit farther from Ephraim lodging are Newport State Park and Potawatomi State Park. Both have miles of trails for hiking and biking. These are perfect activities to get some exercise while staying socially distant from others.

Explore caves and cliffs overlooking Lake Michigan. Cave Point County Park and its iconic limestone shoreline has miles of caves and trails to explore by foot or kayak. The park has free entry, so stop by and check out the view or take a dive into the water!

Watch the sunset on the bay. One of the highlights of being a Door County hotel on the water is our sundeck. We have the best view to watch the sunset. Ephraim Shores Resort Ephraim lodging

Ephraim lodging provides a central location for summer fun

Door County regulars, like many of our guests, have their favorite places that they stick to when staying in Ephraim lodging. While at Ephraim Shores Resort, walking (or driving) to the Ephraim Public Beach followed by an ice cream cone from Wilson’s, and ending the day watching the sunset on our pier is a must. Traditions like these are some of our favorites.

Door County is a historical and scenic, yet trendy, vacation spot. Though full of traditions and popular attractions, there are many hidden gems waiting to be seen on your next weekend getaway in Door County. The following are just a few, as Door County is FULL of them.

Less familiar treasures to seek out when staying in Ephraim lodging

Pillars at the entrance of Hotz Trail – Try out Hotz Trail at Newport State Park. Hotz Trail is a seven mile stretch offering lake front on Europe Lake and views only available in Door County. The pillars at the entrance of the trail are what used to be the entrance to Ferdinand Hotz cottage. Ferdinand Hotz, a German immigrant and Chicago jeweler, became Door County’s largest landowner in the early 1900s, including owning this cottage on Europe Lake. When you walk the Hotz Trail, you are on historic Door County soil!

Porte des Morts Town Park metal staircase – Another lesser-known, breathtaking location in Door County is the view from the bluffs of Porte des Morts Town Park, overlooking Death’s Door. Prior to 2018, there was no (safe) way to get to the waterfront. However, a metal staircase leading to the beautiful shore line was recently built. This hidden gem is a new addition to ease public access and makes for a fun day with the family.

Anderson Store Museum – Everyone knows to visit the colorful and iconic Anderson Dock to take pictures. But have you gone into the Anderson Store Museum? It is like taking a walk back in time. There you will hear personal stories about the historic Anderson family and find out their connection to English royalty.

Washington Island – If you haven’t been to Washington Island, that is at least a day trip you need to take. Leave early in the morning and take in the sun sparkling on the lake while on the ferry ride over Death’s Door. Favorite stops on the island are breakfast at Red Cup Coffee House, grab takeout lunch or delicious bakery items at Island Cafe and Bread Company, a visit to the Jacobsen Museum, or take in the view (and scent) of Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop.

Edible hidden gems – Check out the new wine bar in Ephraim, Pearl Wine Cottage. An old cottage turned into a trendy new hotspot is perfect for date night, a girls night, or just to grab a drink. Located within walking distance of Ephraim Shores, the location is perfect when you have Ephraim lodging.

If you’re looking to spend your Friday night Wisconsin style, look no further. Every Friday Peninsula Pub has a fish fry, and we recommend the perch plate.

Also new to Ephraim is Prince of Pierogi, serving Polish comfort food. Be the first of your friends to try this new delicacy of pierogis and other Polish specialties. It’s close to Ephraim Shores, why not!

Not like you need a reason to come to Door County but these hidden gems can add a bit of fun. To make your reservation at Ephraim Shores today, book directly through our website or call us at 877-854-2371 so we can further accommodate you. Additionally, we have extended our season through the end of October since we got off to a late start. Book now to reserve your Ephraim lodging!

  1. Gorgeous flowers in bloom – It starts with the cherry blossoms and trillium this month in May and just keeps getting better. There is something blooming from spring to fall that can be enjoyed in the wild or in the beautifully planned and cultivated beds on the grounds of many local businesses and residences.
  2. Amazing photo ops – From the aforementioned parks and flowers to the tops of bluffs and lighthouses, a professional photographer or an amateur on their iPhone will be busy here. Check out Sven’s Bluff, Eagle Bluff, Ellison Bluff, and Cana Island Lighthouse, just to name a few, for views that are just as gorgeous from the top as from the water below. 7. Rich history of Door County – The last 100 years have brought attention to Door County. During WWI and WWII, Sturgeon Bay was a shipbuilding hot spot. Additionally, in the 1940s, Door County drew in about 10,000 workers for the cherry picking industry. In the early 1900’s, Door County became the place to go to escape the midwest summer city heat. Now Door County is a top pick for midwest family vacations.
  8. The people – The welcoming people of Door County are what make this place so easy to come back to. All of us here at Ephraim Shores can’t wait to see you soon when you are here for your weekend getaway in Door County!

Peninsula State Park hotels

Peninsula State Park hotels offer quick access to Door County’s crown jewel

This weekend is host to the Door County Half Marathon 2019, and those of you running it will get a firsthand peek at Peninsula State Park. If you are fortunate enough to be staying at one of the Peninsula State Park hotels, such as Ephraim Shores Resort, it is only a short trek to get there. While you won’t be able to see all the park has to offer during the race, it will give you a glimpse of what makes it so special.

Peninsula State Park hotels are a great resource for information about the park

Since Ephraim Shores is one of the closest Peninsula State Park hotels and most of our front desk staff are from Door County, we can provide our guests with some additional insight in regards to things to do. Being close to Peninsula State Park has its perks. For one, we get to visit it quite often and get to do and see more than most people.

There is nothing better on a hot summer day than frolicking in the water at Nicolet beach and soaking in some sun on the sand. How about a quick visit to the lighthouse in the park? Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is open for tours from mid-May through mid-October and is worth a visit.

If beaches are not your thing, maybe a walk or a bike ride on one of the many trails that traverse the park is. Peninsula State Park has over 20 miles of hiking trails available and if you enjoy being close to nature or are an avid bird watcher, these can provide some incredible sights.

While there is plenty to do year round, spring and early summer is a great time to take advantage of the smaller crowds and do some sightseeing. Skyline Road follows the highest terrain, giving excellent views of the bay and panoramic views of the park. There are also great views at Tennison Boat Launch and Welcker’s Point. Don’t forget, our private sundeck has one of the best sunset views in Door County!

What about taking in a show at an open-air theater at Northern Sky Theater? Their 2019 season has some great performances and this season is set to continue that tradition.

For those of you that enjoy golf, Peninsula State Park Golf Course is challenging and has some of the best views of the bay you will find. Once you finish your round and the course closes, visit the Memorial Pole where Chief Simon Onanguisse Kahquados, the last hereditary chief of the Potawatomi Nation, is buried.

Plan ahead, however. There is road construction this year, so check the weekly construction updates here. Then book your stay at Ephraim Shores. It is worth the effort to visit Door County’s Crown Jewel and staying at Peninsula State Park hotels like Ephraim Shores is a great way to access it all.

Grab your camera and a glass of wine and enjoy the extraordinary colors. They are different every night, so you won’t want to miss a single sunset.

Your guide to finding hidden gems in Door County

Anderson’s Dock has the ever popular graffittied warehouse that is also perfect for your weekend getaway in Door County social media posts.

Or take in one of the local breweries or wineries.

From scenic overlooks to biking and theatre, Peninsula State Park has it all
