Red Wing Blackbirds and Burdock Pie

Posted on: June 20th, 2012 by admin No Comments

Well, Fyr Bal Festival is over, the bonfires burned.  We are now ready to head into the summer season.

I wanted to pass along a little tidbit that I learned a few years back about making pie.  I decided to make a rhubarb pie and needed some rhubarb.  I noticed there was a patch of rhubarb behind the motel and it was just the right size, not too small, not too large.  I grabbed the bunch and went home to bake my pie.  I took it out of the oven and it was a beautiful golden brown with a brown sugar crumble topping.  My husband went to take a bite and made an awful face.  He asked where I got the  rhubarb because he thought it was rotten.  I had just baked a beautiful burdock pie.  So, this rhubarb season, if you think you have found a great patch of wild rhubarb, you might want to double check!

On another note, we have red wing blackbirds nesting in our trees.  I believe we have at least 3 nests.  Today I was out watering the flower gardens and the birds do not like it when I get near the nests, so they start to swoop at me.  I did not see a nest in the garden where I was, but apparently I was too close.  The bird actually dove at me and hit me in the head.  I sprayed at it with my hose so it would leave me alone and it kept coming at me.  I am sure it was very amusing for the guests dining in the restaurant and the folks driving by in their cars!

Always an adventure at Ephraim Shores!  Until next time!

Ephraim Receives Bird City Recognition

Posted on: May 20th, 2012 by admin No Comments

On May 19th Ephraim was designated as a Bird City.  We attended a ceremony at the Ephraim Visitor’s Center.  This was a collaboration among the Ephraim Business Council, the Peninsula State Park and the Village of Ephraim.  The event was attended by Smokey the Bear, who greeted guests as they arrived for the ceremony.

A special award was given to Ephraim resident, Scott Weborg for his volunteerism at the state park and the Smokey the Bear Fire Prevention Program.  He is a mainstay of Ephraim, so if you see him around town, congratulate him.  He often sits at the old Ephraim Fire Station, greeting tourists and hoping you will drop a donation in the fire boot to help the fire station museum.
